Foreign Language Teaching from the Perspective of  (Inter)cultural studies

 

Our thematic session focuses on foreign language teaching seen from the perspective of (inter)cultural studies and aims to explore various aspects of interculturality in SLA research and foreign language teaching.

 

The relevant topic areas to be addressed include:

 

  • intercultural competence/cultural awareness in foreign language education – questions of theory and practice,
  • educational practice for integrating the intercultural in language teaching and learning,
  • intercultural competence – foreign language teachers’ beliefs and practices,
  • building, promoting and assessing intercultural competence in the language classroom,
  • affective, cognitive and behavioral aspects of interculturality,
  • critical cultural awareness and political education,
  • media competence as an aspect of cultural awareness,critical media awareness in foreign language teaching and learning,
  • current perspectives on multiculturalism,
  • language-sensitive teaching and whole-school approaches for fostering pupils’ linguistic repertoires,
  • intercultural encounters and othering.

 

Proposals may also concerns other topics (not indicated in the list above, e.g. classroom communication in the foreign language classroom,  the role of literature, films, music, comics,  graphic novels, ethnic memes, podcasts, computer games and social networks in teaching and learning foreign languages etc.), provided that they are related to the main areas of interest in our thematic session.
